POLARIS WORLD
South of Alicante, in the beautiful Murcia region of Spain there is emerging an ambitious network of quality resorts built by Polaris World, Spain’s leading developer of luxury properties.
The resorts are paradise for the keen golfer, being centered around golf courses and yet they also have a wealth of other facilities to offer the rest of the family. There are tennis courts, swimming pools, shops, bars, restaurants and spa facilities. The properties have 24 hour security and broadband internet. Staying in a Polaris World property will enable the golfers to access all the Polaris World golf courses — which will be no less than nine in the Murcia area, making it a golfing capital of Europe. Known as the Nicklaus Golf Trail, Polaris World is constructing a circuit which will boast 9-courses within a radius of 25 km and which they intend to be the best golf experience in Europe.
There are 3 courses already up and running, a fourth opening in the first half of 2008, 2 with work in progress and 3 in the planning stages. The courses each have different characteristics and levels of play and the facilities adhere to the highest standards of quality and design. A shuttle bus connects all the resorts and the Polaris World Beach Club, which means that you don't need your own transport during your stay, unless you wish to venture further afield. The shuttle bus is already running between La Torre, El Valle and Mar Menor Golf Resorts and the service will be extended as more resorts open.
THE MURCIA AREA
The Murcia Region enjoys a wonderful climate, warm mild temperatures (annual average 21° C) low rainfall and blessed with over 300 days of sunshine each year making it the perfect place to relax in or to explore all year round.
The region is vibrant, full of life and colour, the clear sunny days giving the region a distinctive warm Mediterranean light. The Murcia Region shoreline runs just over 250 km, is known as “the warm coast” and is shared by two seas, the Mar Menor and the Mediterranean. The landscape is scattered with breathtaking cliffs, beautiful secluded beaches of soft white sand, lively seaports and natural coves of crystal-clear waters.
Many of these areas are part of the Region's network of Protected Natural Lands. A well known and recognisable local geographical feature is La Manga, a strip of coastline that encloses and separates the 170 km2 Mar Menor lagoon from the Mediterranean, connected only by channels or gorges. The extra warm waters of the Mar Menor are reputed to bestow health benefits. Areas of ecological interest are also found at the San Pedro del Pinatar salt flats and the Calblanque Natural Park.
MAR MENOR GOLF RESORT
This was the very first of the Polaris World resorts. It has a 9 hole golf course on site and a 5 star Intercontinental Hotel. The development of Mar Menor 2, means that in a few years time there will be a full 18 hole course at the Mar Menor Resort. The Mar Menor Resort is currently made up of quality villas and townhouses and there is a communal pool on site. It also has a tennis court, supermarket, bars and restaurants.
Like the other Polaris World Resorts it has 24 hour secuity and is close to both San Javier (Murcia) airport and Alicante airport. This is a unique area with the good fortune to have both a saltwater lake and a Mediterranean shore. The Mar Menor is the largest salt water lake in Europe, part of the ‘Costa Calida’ or the ‘Warm Coast’. The Romans valued the area highly and developed a lucrative salt industry, they called it Belich and referred to it as a port of refuge. It was much deeper in those days and could cope with even the largest of vessels. The mud and clay are said to have therapeutic properties.
The average annual temperature here is 17ºC and the average during the summer is above 21ºC. The winters are mild, rarely falling below 10ºC. Rainfall is also low. With over 3000 hours of sunshine a year and the mild climate, the water here can reach 30º in August. The coast of the Mar Menor is flanked by small towns, historically fishing resorts, today attracting the tourist. San Pedro del Pinatar in the north covers 21.7sq.km and home to just over 15.000 inhabitants though this can swell to 60,000 in the summer months. The area offers several other golf courses, municipal parks and the famous resort of La Manga. La Manga has more than 40km of beaches and the unique choice of two seas with very different water temperatures, the waves of the Meditteranean or the calm and extra warm water of the Mar Menor’ lagoon’. The area is popular for watersports. The possibilities include sailing, diving, windsurfing and jetskiing
