Torrevieja offers a wide range of shopping opportunities.It contains 2,500 commercial establishments dedicating to fashion, furniture, accessories, the home, buying and sale of property, textile, leather, interior design, electronics and gifts. The main national and international brand names in fashion, design and electronic technology are well established in Torrevieja. There is a wealth of interior design, home accessories, gifts and all kinds of textiles. The town also has a full calendar of festivals for all tastes. In very general terms, these are the most important:

  • JANUARY: New Years Day and Procession of the Three Kings.
  • FEBRUARY: Carnival festivals and processions.
  • MARCH: Hotel and Business Gastronomical Festival and Presentation of May Fair.
  • APRIL: Easter processions.
  • MAY: May fair. One of the most important Andalucian festivals on the Mediterranean.
  • JUNE: San Juan bonfires.
  • JULY: Seafarer's festivals of the Virgin of Carmen and the International Festival of Habaneras and Poliphonic singing.
  • AUGUST: Festivals of San Emigdio and de Barrios in honour of tourists.
  • SEPTEMBER: Festival of Vendimia in La Mata.
  • OCTOBER: El Pilar festival.
  • NOVEMBER: All Saints and Halloween. Festival of Saint Cecilia, patron saint of music
  • DECEMBER: Festival of the patron saint of Torrevieja and Christmas.

Street markets are very popular in Torrevieja and the surrounding villages. The street market is an alternative to traditional commerce and in them you can obtain numerous objects for decoration, textiles, clothing, interior design, craft, animals, footwear and horticultural produce at very reasonable prices, which can sometimes be good buys. The street markets have a real arab-style market atmosphere and have achieved great popularity amongst the Spanish and the thousands of Europeans that visit Torrevieja.Some are held once a week and others are permanent. They are often held on seaside promenades. The most popular street markets are:

  • Torrevieja weekly market: Every Friday. Number of stalls: 1200
  • Torrevieja craft market: Weekends. Number of stalls: 300
  • La Mata weekly street market: Every Wednesday. Number of stalls: 250
  • Campo de Guardamar street market: Every Sunday. Number of stalls: 1000

Situated next to the sea in the South of the Valencian Community, is surrounded by two large natural saltwater lagoons which form the well known “salterns of Torrevieja” considered the biggest in Europe. They are famous for their huge population of flamingoes. Torrevieja is 47kms from Alicante, the provincial capital, and about 35kms from the airports of Alicante and San Javier, it stands out for it’s conversion in recent years into a first class tourist centre. The town square is very picturesque, with a small church and a few street cafes. The are many shops to browse through and boat trips can be taken from the town’s lively harbour -a firm favourite is the day trip to the Isle of Tabarca. Each evening there is a craft market along the harbour front and every Friday there is a huge street market - possibly the largest one in the Costa Blanca.

Among the opportunities for recreation, relaxation and amusement, the town places at the disposal of all its visitors one of the best Yacht Clubs in Spain, tennis and golf clubs (four 18 hole championship golf courses), a flying club, a horse-riding school, a municipal sports centre (with covered courts, tennis, athletics and sauna) and for the winter months an Olympic sized indoor pool. There is also a municipal football stadium, bull ring, water park (Aquapolis), fairground, theatre, 10 pin bowling centre, huge new soft play centre and several cinemas.

Some of the best beaches can be found close to town, including Los Locos and Playa Del Cura. Along the front of Los Locos beach there are bars and restaurants with more bars throughout the back streets. There are butchers, fishmongers, spit-roasted chicken shops, bakeries and supermarkets, all providing mouth-wateringly fresh bread, pastries, fish and meat produce. A few of the local restaurants also offer a takeaway service.

Just a five minute walk away from Los Locos Beach is the totally pedestrianised promenade and beach of Playa Del Cura, where you can happily watch the children on the beach whilst having a nice relaxing meal in one of the promenade based restaurants at the same time! You will find that most of the restaurants in Torrevieja are very child-friendly and understand the “joys” of dining out with young children!

From these two beaches, you are within easy walking distance, all the way along the seafront, of the lively town centre of Torrevieja where you will find street markets, a marina and harbour, resident fun fair, buzzing nightlife and an extensive new promenade. There are restaurants and bars which cater for all tastes. The main meeting place in town is usually at the main fountain overlooking the beautiful marina, where you can enjoy a morning coffee or an evening cocktail or two!

Every evening there's a street market selling a variety of arts, crafts, clothing, leather goods, jewellery and souvenirs etc.). There's also a big fairground and you'll normally find various artists and street performers providing entertainment around the town in high season.

Unlike many Spanish destinations Torrevieja is not a holiday area dominated by souvenir shops and bars offering all day English breakfasts. The town is still a working town with a history of salt production and an active fishing industry. Currently a comprehensive landscaping plan is underway which includes the construction of numerous parks, a health spa, safe bathing areas and coastal walkways.

The climate in Torrevieja is very stable, belonging to the temperate Continental type, with predominantly mild temperatures in winter as in summer. The coldest months are January and
February, with temperatures ranging from 12 to 16 degrees and the hottest months are July and August with temperatures ranging from 28 to 35 degrees. The Autumn - from October to December - is the very mild season with temperatures ranging from 21 to 27 degrees.

Amongst Torrevieja's many attractions as a Mediterranean tourist centre, is its superb gastronomy, which nowadays combines traditional dishes with "new cuisine", and which can be found in most of the town's restaurants. Fish forms the basis of traditional Torrevieja cooking, along with vegetables from the nearby irrigated regions of the Segura river "the market garden of Europe", and meats, especially pork, which is still made into delicious home made sausages and cold meats in areas around the town.

Torrevieja is 41 kms away from Alicante to the north, 23 kms from Elche to the northwest, and 53 kms from Murcia in the southeast. Torrevieja has a protected Natural Park with two salt lakes, and 20 kms of coastline containing six large beaches - La Mata, Cabo Cervera, Los Locos, El Cura, Los Náufragos and Ferris - and about 20 coves with an abundance of cliffs.
